The Penguins were in the middle of their season of tanking games. Former head coach admitted the team had lost on purpose to land the number one draft pick, but former gm eddie johnston denied this. Lou Angotti stated that there were times during the season the Johnston would be mad at the coach, because some move or play led to the team winning a game. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in October of 1984 wrote about the Penguins tanking, and Mario Lemieux himself had heard rumors of this. The Penguins had even traded defenseman Randy Carlyle, who had won the Norris trophy in 1981, for no active players. Sniper Rick Kehoe, was shut down for the season for, an alleged serious injury. In the end, there were no consequences for the Penguins. |
