Originally scheduled to take place in 2020 (24 July - 9 August), the event was postponed to 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was the first time that happened in the history of the Olympic Games (previous games had been cancelled but not rescheduled). USA dominated the Games (113 medals), followed by China (88) Canada 11th (24 medals). No spectators in the stands (some offials). Canada had a lot of success in the pool, and of course the USA as well. American sprinter Allyson Felix won her 10th Olympic medal (most decorated Olympic female track-and-field athlete of all time). The Games saw also some trans athletes competing. It was the fourth times the Games were held in Japan second times in Tokyo (Tokyo 1964 Summer, Sapporo 1972 Winter, and Nagano 1998 Winter). |
