Two weeks prior to this game, Joe Namath was injured in preseason when Paul Naumoff of the Lions hit his knee with the top of his helmet putting him out for most of the 1971 season. The Chiefs were still a strong team and the Jets defense was also quite strong which made this a closely fought contest. This game was at Municipal Stadium in what would be their last season in this venue. This is also one of the earliest Monday Night Football broadcasts to feature Frank Gifford on play by play who had taken over for Keith Jackson after the 1970 debut season. Frank Gifford, Howard Cosell and Don Meredith have the call. |
