THE HISTORY OF THE MCAA (est. 2003)

The Midwest Collegiate Athletic Association (MCAA) was started in 2003, by eight guys with nothing better to do. They all had previous NFL fantasy experience, but none had ever played the college game. After scouring some of the other NCAA Fantasy sites for rules and suggestions, this rag-tag group of friends/co-workers/family finally got the MCAA underway in time for the 2003 season.
Two conferences made up this first season. The North Star Conference members were: Dave State Destroyers (Dave Kropacek), Norse Dakota State Bison (Scott Stockton), Springfield Tech (Chris Franz), and Iowa A&M Cowtippers (Dave Boese). The American Midwest Conference members were: Da Illini Royal Academy (Keith Knautz), Dumbledore Dropouts (Will Groskreutz), Crossroads Learning Center Figure Skaters (Bill Groskreutz) and KTMC Vet U Dancin Dalmatians (John Grunwald).
The first draft was held online, via e-mail and message board. The Academy chose Maurice Clarett with the first pick, and almost immediately there were allegations of academic fraud at Ohio State. Coincidence? We think not.

In 2003, teams played conference foes twice, and non-conference foes once. Springfield Tech upset Norse Dakota State in the North Star Conference Championship, 67-54. Crossroads Learning Center capped off a 10-0 regular season with a 63-32 win over Da Illini Royal Academy in the American Midwest Conference Championship.
When the BCS Poll shook out, it gave us 11-0 Crossroads vs 7-4 NDSU in the Rose Bowl for the national title. NDSU stunned the Figure Skaters, 43-36. It was the 'Skaters second-lowest score of the season, and ruined their attempt to go unbeaten. Bison QB Jason White earned MVP honors.
In the third place game, the Orange Bowl, No. 3 Da Academy trounced No. 4 Springfield Tech, 97-66. Academy QB Brad Smith was the MVP.
In the fifth place game, the Sugar Bowl, No. 5 Iowa A&M beat No. 6 KTMC Vet U, 77-43. A&M Receiver Lee Evans was the game's MVP.
In the seventh place game, the Fiesta Bowl, No. 8 Dave State defeated No. 7 Dumbledore 46-30. DSU Kicker Luke Phillips was named MVP.

The MCAA expanded by eight teams in 2004, adding the following four teams to the North Star Conference: Omaha University Mavericks (Tim Moore), Turkey Tech University Gobblers (Kevin Moore), Logan State Falcons (Dan Moore) and Woodbury A&M attlin' Badgers (Bill Tatum).
The four new American Midwest Conference teams were: Northeast Illinois University Longhorns (Ty Hickman), Schaumburg State Mallrats (Tom Cooper), Bloomington State Purple Platypi (Dan Fuhrman) and Maryland Terrapins (Ed Mays).
Existing teams were allowed to keep one or two players. Quarterback Chris Leak was the first pick in the draft, taken by Turkey Tech. Iowa A&M selected Cedric Benson (dropped by Da Illini Royal Academy), and Benson went on to re-write the record book and win the Heisman trophy.
In another new twist, owners scheduled their own non-conference games. The first three weeks were reserved for non-conference games, while the final seven weeks of the regular season were reserved for conference games.
Iowa A&M and Springfield Tech were No. 2 and No. 1 for most of the season, and they finally met in the Week 10 for the NSC Regular Season title. They met in Week 11 in the Conference Championship Game - Iowa A&M won both contests.

In the AMC, Schaumburg State cruised to the regular season title. Dumbledore won a FIVE-WAY tie-breaker for second, winning the right to play in the Conference Championship Game - losing to Schaumburg State.
The final BCS Poll pit 9-2 Iowa A&M against 8-3 Springfield Tech in the Rose Bowl for the championship. It was the third straight week the two teams would meet. And this time, the Isotopes came out on top, 65-59. Tech Wide Receiver Taylor Stubblefield was named Rose Bowl MVP. The teams had played 3 straight weeks, with no game decided by more than six points. In fact, Tech outscored A&M 195-194.
In the Orange Bowl, Schaumburg State defeated Turkey Tech, 54-26. Mallrats Running Back Chad Scott was named MVP.
In the Sugar Bowl, Maryland blasted defending champion Norse Dakota State, 76-34. Terrapins Running Back Adrian Peterson was named MVP.
In the Fiesta Bowl, KTMC Vet U defeated Northeast Illinois, 51-31. KTMC Quarterback Brock Berlin was named MVP.
A "non-BCS" bowl was added this season. The Cotton Bowl would host the next two best BCS teams with at least .500 records. Bloomington State won the inaugural game over Woodbury A&M, 63-21, with BSU Running Back Cedric Houston taking MVP Honors.
